Head south on the AP-7 to the historic port city of Cartagena, founded by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC. The Roman theatre museum, the Punic wall, and the naval museum are all within walking distance of each other. Continue along the Mar Menor coastline for sweeping lagoon views before heading back. Allow a full day for this route.

3. Alicante to Villena and Bocairent (2 hours)

This inland route takes you through Alicante's wine country and into the mountainous border zone with Valencia province. Villena hosts an impressive 15th-century castle and an archaeological museum housing a remarkable Bronze Age gold treasure. Continue to Bocairent, a whitewashed hilltop town with a network of caves carved into the cliff face. A wonderfully off-the-beaten-track day out.

4. Alicante to Tabarca Island Day Trip via Santa Pola (45 minutes to port)

Drive south to Santa Pola, park your rental car, and take the short ferry crossing to Tabarca - Spain's only inhabited island. 5. Alicante to Xativa and Valencia (2.5 hours one way)

This longer route north on the N-340 and AP-7 passes through the heart of the orange-growing region. Stop in Xativa to see its double-castle complex overlooking the plain, then continue to Valencia for the afternoon. The City of Arts and Sciences and the original paella restaurants in the Albufera rice fields make this a culturally rich journey worth an overnight stay.
